Biographie
Samuel Conlon Nancarrow est né le 27 octobre 1912 à Texarkana, dans l’Arkansas, ville où son père, prénommé Samuel également, avait été muté par son employeur, la Standard Oil. Samuel Nancarrow en deviendra le maire entre 1925 et 1930. On peut encore voir son nom, sans doute d'origine galloise, sur plusieurs plaques et monuments de la ville. Indocile dès son plus jeune âge, Conlon est expédié dans une école militaire pour y apprendre la discipline. Au lieu de cela, il se retrouve « contaminé par le virus de la musique » et commence à jouer du jazz à la trompette. Nancarrow père expédie alors Conlon à Vanderbilt University pour qu’il y poursuive des études d’ingénieur. Mais Conlon n’assiste qu’à quelques rares cours et, de sa propre initiative, part s’inscrire au Cincinatti College Conservatory pour y étudier la musique. C’est là qu’il entendra le Cincinatti Symphony dans l’une des toutes premières interprétations du Sacre du Printemps aux États-Unis, un événement qui suscitera en lui cette fascination pour Stravinsky et pour le rythme qui ne devait plus le quitter./.../ Source (Brahms/IRCAM)
